About Reflexology

Reflexology is a holistic therapy, which is carried out on the feet or hands and aims to induce the body to restore balance, reduce stress and promote general health and wellbeing. It has been used successfully for thousands of years by cultures from all around the world. It is based on the idea that the feet are mini maps of the body and that there are points or reflexes on the feet which relate to the vital organs, glands or structures of the body. For example, in reflexology, the big toe is the head and at the base of the big toe are reflexes for the neck.

Reflexology treatments are suitable for all ages and can help to boost energy, strengthen the immune system and create a stronger body and a calmer mind. It encourages the natural drainage of the lymphatic system and can also relieve symptoms of various health conditions such as stress, anxiety, back pain, migraine, poor digestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), respiratory problems, asthma, headache, bladder problems, menopausal symptoms or period pain. It also provide a great support throughout pregnancy and post birth. In addition, can help to develop a greater bond between mother and their children.

How does reflexology work

By applying gentle pressure to specific reflex points most commonly on the feet (but also the hands), I aim to induce a state of deep relaxation and enhance circulation and nerve supply, which are necessary to stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms. As a holistic treatment, reflexology aims to help the body to restore balance, reduce stress and promote general health and wellbeing.

Every organ, structure and system of the body is mirrored in the feet and hands through reflex points. These different reflexes of the feet and hands are connected to the body through energetic channels of energy or zones. These zones or channels can easily become blocked through stress, emotions, trauma or illness, causing the body to function less efficiently. Imagine a zone is like a hosepipe and an illness is like a stone that is trapped in the pipe. High pressure will build in one end and low pressure in the other. Reflexology aims to release tension and direct the free flow of energy throughout the body to bring about self healing and normalize the functions of the body.

During a treatment, the therapist uses specific thumb and finger techniques to apply pressure to the reflexes on the feet. This helps clear blockages and congestion in the body, which in turn allows the body to rebalance and be healthy (the blockages or congestion may have arisen from an accident, injury or illness). When the body is not working in harmony, we are more prone to infection which can manifest as colds, headaches and fatigue. Reflexology is an extremely relaxing and revitalising treatment and is suitable for people of all ages.

What happens during a treatment?

The feet and hands are like mini maps of the body with the right side being reflected on the right foot and the left side of the body reflected on the left foot. Reflexology uses a series of techniques to apply pressure to the different reflexes of the feet to bring about a state of deep relaxation, thereby stimulating the body’s own healing processes, helping you return to a position of balance and well-being.

What Benefits can be Expected

As a holistic treatment, Reflexology induces a deep sense of relaxation and as such can:
help reduce stress and tension
improve circulation through the body and as a result may optimise the function of organs and cells.
enhance neural function - there are over 7,000 nerve endings on the feet which are all stimulated during the treatment
boost energy levels giving a sense of general wellbeing
stimulate elimination of toxins.

Note that while Reflexology can alleviate the side effect of some symptoms, it does not claim to treat, cure or diagnose illnesses.
